What are Surgical Dentures?
Surgical dentures are also known as immediate dentures.
These dentures are inserted immediately after your natural teeth have been extracted, so you never go without having any missing teeth. Cool fact this is where the name “immediate dentures” originates from.
Before your natural teeth are extracted, our denturists will create custom moulds of your mouth to design and create your surgical dentures. As soon as your teeth are removed, the surgical dentures are fitted and placed directly over your extraction sites. They protect your gums during the healing process, and help to minimize gum bleeding.
Typically it takes 9-12 months after extractions for your tissues to heal. We will then conduct a permanent reline to “refit” the tissue surface of the denture to your mouth, so you can continue to wear your dentures permanently.
Surgical (Immediate) Dentures

You won’t look back once you have surgical dentures in – here’s why!
Surgical dentures can improve your speech, where you don’t have to worry about speaking without teeth and then have to relearn all over again once your dentures are made. Think of surgical dentures like a “band aid” to help control the bleeding and swelling after extractions.
They also help maintain facial and lip support, preventing TMJ discomfort.
- You never have to appear in public without teeth.
- They help reduce bleeding after the procedure.
- Can help protect the sensitive tissues at the extraction sites from irritation due to tongue and food.
- You do not have to learn to speak without teeth and then re-learn once dentures are made.
- You can chew better than you could without teeth during the normal waiting period for conventional dentures.
Our Surgical Denture Package Options
The standard denture is our most basic, and economical option. Compared to our more upgraded and personalized denture options, this one has a limited number of teeth molds and shades. The standard teeth molds are composed of a softer layer, meaning the denture teeth can wear down faster, requiring replacement sooner. Our Standard denture teeth molds typically last 4-5 years, providing short-medium term
With Upgraded dentures, we have access to a broader selection of teeth molds and shades, allowing you to choose from higher quality teeth to get a desired smile that suits your facial structure.
As well, the teeth are composed of a much denser material for higher durability, with greater chewing capabilities. Suited for medium to longer term use, up to 5-7 years.
Our personalized-complex denture is the highest quality denture that we offer, creating an extremely natural appearance for all those that pursue this option.
These dentures are high impact, stain and wear resistant. Even more, the denture base is custom tinted to naturally blend in and match your mouth, and smile. Suited for long term use, can last up to 10 years.
Surgical Dentures: Our Appointment Process

Consultation
The surgical denture process begins with an examination of your oral cavity and discussion around the expectations of your perfect smile. This will include a review of our denture package options available and a custom breakdown of how the process would look if you decided to work with us.

Preliminary Dental Impression Colouring & Shape
Here, we will capture preliminary dental impressions and bite molds of your oral cavity to create a fitted denture that’s customized to you, reviewing teeth shades and shape options to find out the most natural look for you.

Final Impressions
It’s time to capture final impressions of your oral cavity to ensure the denture fit is comfortable and perfectly snug against your gum tissue.

Denture Pick-Up & Delivery
Good news – at this point your dentures are complete and are ready for pick-up. Here, the dentures will be inserted after extractions and placed directly into your mouth, with a 24/hr following day check-up.

Post Extractions Follow-Up Aftercare
With the dentures in place, we want to see how they’re fitting a few days or weeks afterwards.
You can expect to feel swollen and tender during this time, but it’s completely normal! We’ll make any minor adjustments we see fit (temporary soft liner, etc.) based on your feedback and our own observations. After that, we’ll book you in for monthly check-ups to see how everything is healing and progressing until we permanently refit your dentures in 9-12 month’s time.
